The much-hyped summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin finally took place in Anchorage, Alaska, drawing intense global attention. What was billed as a decisive step towards ending the Russia-Ukraine war turned into a spectacle of optics, psychological games, and a war of perceptions—with little concrete progress to show.

A Red-Carpet Welcome, But Putin Unshaken

Trump personally rolled out the red carpet for Putin, an unusual gesture that immediately set the stage for controversy back home. Videos of American soldiers literally laying out the carpet for Putin’s arrival quickly went viral in Europe and the U.S., with critics calling it a humiliation for America.

In a theatrical move before the meeting, Trump ordered a B-2 stealth bomber and F-22 fighter jets to make a dramatic flyover. The clear intent was to intimidate and psychologically pressure Putin. Yet, the Russian leader walked unfazed down the carpet, meeting Trump with his trademark composure. The imagery only strengthened Putin’s image globally, with Russian state media hailing it as proof that Moscow cannot be cowed.

A Three-Hour Meeting, but No Peace Deal

The two leaders met for nearly three hours behind closed doors. Contrary to expectations, there was no breakthrough on a Ukraine ceasefire or peace framework. Instead, the post-summit optics raised more questions than answers.

At the joint press conference that followed, Putin spoke for about eight minutes while Trump spoke for only four. Neither took questions from journalists. Both leaders abruptly walked out after just 12 minutes, fueling criticism that the summit had been stage-managed and empty of substance.

A Blow to NATO and Ukraine

For Europe and NATO, the outcome was troubling. Analysts quickly noted that the Alaska summit seemed less about saving Ukraine and more about cutting America’s losses. Trump reportedly signaled that the U.S. would no longer be dragged deep into the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Instead, Washington’s message to Moscow appeared to be: do as you wish with Ukraine and NATO, but avoid direct conflict with America.

This stance has alarmed NATO allies, who feel Trump has effectively abandoned them. A retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. on CNN called the episode “humiliating for NATO and Zelensky,” warning that Trump’s posture has emboldened Putin.

Meanwhile, Russia intensified its shelling soon after the summit—interpreted by analysts as a signal that Moscow had gained time and tactical space from the meeting.

Trump Faces Backlash at Home

Domestically, Trump faced sharp criticism and ridicule. U.S. media and opposition leaders accused him of bowing to Putin and returning empty-handed. Fox News, however, tried to spin the narrative as a success, giving Trump “10 out of 10 marks” for diplomacy. But across Europe and within NATO, the dominant sentiment was that Putin walked away the victor, while Trump left diminished.

Even Trump’s symbolic attempts to project toughness backfired. His pre-summit warning that Russia would face “direct consequences” if no peace deal was reached rang hollow after the meeting ended without results.

A Silver Lining for India

One unexpected development from the summit concerned India. Trump hinted at possibly lifting—or at least postponing—the 25% secondary tariff that was set to hit India from August 27, 2025, as punishment for purchasing Russian oil.

After the summit, Trump indicated that tariffs on Russia’s trading partners like India and China were “not necessary for now.” This signals a potential reprieve for New Delhi, which had been bracing for the economic fallout of U.S. penalties.

Putin’s Symbolic Victory

For Putin, the Alaska summit was a dual triumph:

Global Optics: He projected strength and composure in the face of U.S. military theatrics, boosting his image both at home and abroad.

Strategic Leverage: He bought more time in Ukraine while extracting tacit acknowledgment from Trump that Washington would not aggressively confront Moscow over the war.

Putin even used the summit setting to remind Trump of Russia’s historical ties to Alaska, once Russian territory, and paid tribute to Russian soldiers’ graves there—a symbolic gesture widely celebrated in Russia.

The Road Ahead: Zelensky’s U.S. Visit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is now set to visit Washington. Many believe Trump will pressure him to compromise, potentially forcing Ukraine to accept Russia’s control over the 20% of territory already occupied. Analysts warn that if Zelensky resists, his political survival could be at stake.

Conclusion: A Summit of Style, Not Substance

The Trump-Putin Alaska summit will be remembered less for progress and more for its optics. The red-carpet spectacle, fighter jet theatrics, and abrupt press conference highlighted the drama but masked the lack of achievements.

Winners: Putin and, to an extent, India.

Losers: NATO, Ukraine, and Trump’s credibility.

While billed as a peace summit, it may instead mark the moment Washington quietly stepped back from Ukraine, leaving Europe to shoulder the burden—and giving Russia more room to maneuver.
