In a shocking incident this morning, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public hearing session at her Shalimar Bagh residence. The weekly Jansunwai, a platform where citizens bring their grievances directly to the Chief Minister, turned violent when a man in his 40s suddenly assaulted her.
According to initial reports, the attacker, identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji, a resident of Rajkot in Gujarat, approached the Chief Minister during the interaction, placed some documents on her table, and then attempted to pull her. In the scuffle, Rekha Gupta sustained injuries to her hand, shoulder, and head. Security personnel present at the spot overpowered the attacker, who was immediately taken into custody for interrogation.
The Attack and Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses have narrated a disturbing sequence of events. One of them claimed the man held the Chief Minister by her hair for nearly 80 seconds, slapped her, and pushed her to the ground. Gupta reportedly fell on a nearby table, aggravating her injuries.
Doctors examining her confirmed multiple injuries, but sources emphasize that while she is physically stable, the mental trauma of the attack has been far more severe.
“This wasn’t a casual outburst. He came with the intent to cause harm,” said a senior minister present at the residence. BJP leader Pravesh Verma also confirmed that Gupta had injuries on her hand, head, and shoulder, and her medical examination (MLC) was underway.
Questions Over Motive
The attack has left many unanswered questions. The most glaring among them:
👉Why would a man from Rajkot, Gujarat travel to Delhi to target the Chief Minister?
👉He had no pending grievance with the Delhi government. Then what was his purpose?
👉How did he know about the weekly Jansunwai schedule, where citizens can directly meet the CM?
Preliminary police investigation suggests that the man had been conducting reconnaissance (recce) of the Chief Minister’s Shalimar Bagh residence for the past 24 hours. His mobile phone reportedly contains videos of both the CM’s official and ancestral residences in the locality.
This revelation has heightened suspicions that the incident was pre-planned rather than a spontaneous act of rage.
Family’s Version and Controversial Claims
Meanwhile, Rajesh Khimji’s mother, when contacted, denied any knowledge of her son’s visit to Delhi. She described him as an animal lover and a dog enthusiast, insisting that he suffered from mental imbalance.
Some reports suggest that he was angered by a Supreme Court ruling on stray dogs, and wanted to push for opening a veterinary hospital or NGO. However, this explanation raises further questions:
👉If his grievance was with the Supreme Court, why target the Delhi CM?
👉Was the “dog lover” narrative an attempt at a cover-up?
Security Lapses Under Scrutiny
The attack has triggered serious concerns about the security arrangements for the Chief Minister. Despite being a high-security figure, the accused managed to not only enter her residence but also physically assault her for more than a minute before being restrained.
Kapil Mishra, another Delhi leader, went so far as to call the incident “an attempt to kill”, emphasizing the deliberate manner in which the attacker executed his plan.
Political Fallout: Conspiracy Allegations
The political temperature in Delhi spiked immediately after the attack.
👉Several BJP leaders pointed fingers at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accusing them of orchestrating political drama. They compared the attack to earlier incidents involving former CM Arvind Kejriwal, where ink was thrown at him and scuffles occurred during rallies.
👉On the other hand, AAP leaders condemned the incident and demanded accountability for the security breach, asking: “If the CM is not safe, how can ordinary citizens be safe in Delhi?”
Former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also reacted, condemning the attack and expressing solidarity with Rekha Gupta.
Key Questions That Remain
While police investigation is underway, several pressing questions demand answers:
👉 Who sent the attacker from Rajkot to Delhi?
👉 On whose instructions was he conducting surveillance of the CM’s residence?
👉 How did he know about the Jansunwai timing and schedule?
👉 Was this attack politically motivated, or the act of a disturbed individual?
Delhi Police has sought assistance from Gujarat Police to dig deeper into the attacker’s background and possible affiliations. Sources hint that the accused might have links with a political outfit, though nothing has been confirmed officially.
The Road Ahead
For now, the good news is that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is out of danger and undergoing treatment for her injuries. However, the incident has raised serious concerns about:
👉 The safety of public representatives in high-risk roles
👉 The vulnerability of open forums like Jansunwai
👉 The possibility of deeper political conspiracies at play
As Delhi Police continues its interrogation and political blame-games intensify, one thing is certain: this attack has shaken the capital and will have far-reaching political implications.
