Punjab Under Kejriwal’s Shadow? The Rising Controversy Over AAP’s Leadership

The Rising Political Storm in Punjab

Punjab’s political landscape is witnessing a dramatic transformation, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann seemingly sidelined while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo Arvind Kejriwal takes center stage. The party’s strategic communication increasingly attributes the state government’s achievements to Kejriwal, sparking a major debate—who truly holds power in Punjab? Is Mann merely a nominal leader while Kejriwal governs from behind the curtain?

Bhagwant Mann: The Puppet CM?

Recent government campaigns and official communications in Punjab showcase Bhagwant Mann’s photographs, yet his name is conspicuously absent. AAP’s ongoing anti-drug campaign, which should ideally highlight Mann’s leadership, is being credited entirely to Kejriwal. This raises serious questions—has Punjab’s governance been centralized under Kejriwal’s control?

Kejriwal’s rhetoric reinforces this perception. His frequent statements refer to Punjab’s administration as “our government,” giving the impression that major decisions are no longer being made by Bhagwant Mann. Kejriwal’s repeated visits, closed-door meetings, and hands-on approach in Punjab suggest an unprecedented level of interference, fueling speculation that Punjab’s autonomy is being compromised.

Internal Power Struggles and AAP’s Political Chess Game

Beneath the surface, AAP is experiencing an intense internal power struggle. Reports indicate Kejriwal is systematically removing those who could challenge his dominance.

One striking example is Raghav Chadha, once considered a rising star within the party. Chadha, who was often seen as Kejriwal’s right-hand man, has suddenly faded from the spotlight. Was his growing influence seen as a threat? His absence has fueled speculation that Kejriwal does not tolerate leaders who could potentially outshine him.

Further tensions have emerged within AAP’s Rajya Sabha ranks. Two MPs allegedly refused to vacate their seats when Kejriwal and his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, sought entry into the Upper House. This defiance underscores the rift between AAP’s central leadership and its Punjab representatives. Reports suggest that a major cabinet reshuffle is underway, where Bhagwant Mann’s close aides are being replaced with Kejriwal loyalists. If true, this move could further erode Mann’s political authority.

Kejriwal’s Rajya Sabha Gambit: A Strategic Exit Plan?

With multiple corruption allegations looming, including the excise policy scandal and mismanagement in school infrastructure projects, Kejriwal appears to be setting the stage for a strategic exit from Delhi politics. Speculation is rife that he is eyeing a Rajya Sabha seat from Punjab—a move that could provide him with immunity from potential legal troubles and a new political stronghold.

The appointment of Sandeep Pathak, a trusted Kejriwal aide, as AAP’s Punjab-in-charge further supports this theory. There are also rumors that Kejriwal is positioning another confidant, Durgesh Pathak, for a key ministerial role in Punjab, strengthening his control over the state’s governance. If Kejriwal successfully maneuvers himself into the Rajya Sabha, it could mark a turning point for both AAP and Punjab’s political future.

The Crumbling ‘Delhi Model’ and Punjab’s Governance Crisis

AAP’s 2022 victory in Punjab was largely based on the promise of replicating the so-called ‘Delhi Model’—a governance framework built on free electricity, improved healthcare, and quality education. However, reality is now catching up with the party.

Critics argue that the Delhi Model was nothing more than an electoral gimmick. Reports indicate that many Mohalla Clinics lack basic infrastructure, the transport system in Delhi is deteriorating, and corruption scandals are surfacing one after another.

The situation in Punjab is eerily similar. Recent audits suggest mismanagement in public projects, particularly in education and healthcare. The free electricity scheme has strained the state’s finances, raising concerns about long-term sustainability. If these issues continue, AAP’s credibility in Punjab could be severely damaged.

How Does Punjab Compare to Other States?

The leadership dynamic in Punjab contrasts sharply with other states led by strong Chief Ministers. For example, in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath commands full authority, while in Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami has established his presence without interference from BJP’s central leadership. In these states, the Chief Minister’s role is clear and undisputed. However, in Punjab, Kejriwal’s shadow looms large, making Bhagwant Mann’s position increasingly precarious.

What’s Next for Punjab’s Political Future?

As AAP navigates this turbulent phase, the future of Punjab’s governance remains uncertain. If Bhagwant Mann wishes to assert his leadership, he must address the public directly and clarify his role in the administration. Otherwise, he risks becoming a footnote in Punjab’s political history—a mere figurehead overshadowed by Kejriwal’s ambitions.

Will Punjab continue under Kejriwal’s remote control, or will Mann reclaim his authority? The coming months will be crucial in determining whether AAP’s governance in Punjab is a sustainable success or just another political experiment doomed to fail.
