Off late GNCTD is under the scanner of apex court. Last month the Supreme Court pulled up the Delhi government for not providing funds for the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and now, non-provision of funds to the Delhi high court and district judiciary for infrastructure development. Supreme Court on Monday (11/12/2023) came down heavily on the Delhi Government over the inordinate delay in giving funds. Surprisingly The issue of funds for court room expansion has been pending since 2021, despite receiving permission.
Why Funds was supposed to be Paid to Delhi High Court
- Delhi’s high court lacks basic facilities, including courtrooms. An estimated 110 magistrates are going to be ready by next year and there is lack of adequate infrastructure to accommodate them.
- The Supreme Court indicates shortage of approx. 118 court rooms and residential quarters for the judicial officer.
- There is lack of space in any district court complex in the capital and no project was in the pipeline for construction of new building
- The lack of funds is not only affecting the functioning of the courts but also causing inconvenience to the public as number of pending cases are increasing day by day

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, directed a meeting to be convened by the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and attended by the Chief Secretary of Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), Secretary-in -charge of PWD (Public Works Department), Principal Secretary (Law),
Apex Court has directed the government to release funds by Thursday (14 Dec 2023).
Even before this, there have been reports of court-related projects getting stuck due to lack of funds. Most say that all these showcase the poor functioning of the GNCTD as court has to intervene in the govt matters every time.
