Indian Army Conducts Precision Strikes on Myanmar-Based Terror Camps; Key ULFA-I, NSCN(K) Commanders Reported Killed

In a major counter-insurgency operation with far-reaching strategic implications, the Indian Army has reportedly conducted precision surgical strikes on multiple terrorist camps situated inside Myanmar territory, targeting China-backed insurgent groups responsible for destabilizing India’s northeastern region.

Though the Indian Army has not issued an official statement as of yet, top intelligence sources and confirmations from the insurgent group ULFA-I (United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent) suggest that the operation was executed in the early hours of Sunday, with coordinated drone and missile strikes on at least four known terror bases operated by ULFA-I and NSCN(K) (National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Khaplang faction).

Key Details of the Strike

More than 100 drones were deployed for high-precision targeting across four camps located in Myanmar’s border regions.

The camps, according to sources, were hit by drone-fired missiles followed by sustained surveillance to prevent insurgent regrouping.

The operation reportedly led to the elimination of key ULFA-I commanders, including Lt. Gen. Nain Ahom and Colonel Ganesh Ahom (aka Ganesh Lahon).

Over 19 other cadres are believed to have been killed or severely injured in follow-up strikes.

In a significant intelligence breakthrough, one camp was hit during the funeral rites of Lt. Gen. Ahom, indicating real-time tracking capabilities.

While Indian defence officials have refrained from public comment, ULFA-I has issued a press release acknowledging the attack, confirming casualties, and vowing retaliation. Notably, the group claimed that a missile struck the camp during Ahom’s funeral, suggesting precision timing and deep intelligence penetration.

Strategic Implications: Beyond the Myanmar Border

This operation is being widely interpreted as more than a counter-insurgency measure. Defence analysts say it sends a geopolitical message to powers allegedly backing insurgent activity in India’s Northeast—most notably, China and Pakistan.

Security sources suggest that both ULFA-I and NSCN(K) have received logistical support, arms, and safe havens from Chinese intelligence units operating along the Myanmar-China border. The strikes, therefore, are being viewed as a covert message to Beijing that India will respond assertively to indirect aggression—especially when aimed at fomenting unrest in vulnerable regions like Assam, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.

Second Myanmar Operation Under Modi Government

This marks the second publicly known cross-border operation by India into Myanmar under the Modi government. The previous strike took place in June 2015, when Indian forces targeted NSCN(K) militants following an ambush on Indian soldiers in Manipur.

In both instances, the Indian Army acted without direct military escalation, using surgical tactics to neutralize specific threats while minimizing civilian impact or political fallout with Myanmar.

The timing of this latest operation is also notable: India’s Foreign Minister is currently on a regional diplomatic tour and is scheduled to visit China shortly. The message is clear—India’s counter-terror strategy will not be restrained by diplomatic niceties when national security is at stake.

Rising Threat in the Northeast

The attack comes amid increasing concern over foreign-sponsored destabilization efforts in India’s Northeast. Intelligence reports point to a collusion between Pakistan’s ISI, Chinese agencies, and jihadi elements operating via Bangladesh, all allegedly working to reignite separatist sentiments and unrest in the region.

Indian security agencies have recently noted unusual activity and regrouping efforts by ULFA-I and NSCN(K), prompting what appears to be a preemptive neutralization of emerging threats before they could escalate into cross-border violence.

Official Silence, but Confirmations Trickling In

While the Indian Army has so far remained tight-lipped, the ULFA-I’s own admission of being hit lends significant credibility to the reports. Additionally, multiple regional news sources, intelligence insiders, and defence analysts have cited drone activity, cross-border incursions, and camp destruction in the affected areas.

It is expected that the Indian Army will release an official briefing once the operation concludes. For now, the silence is strategic.

A Clear Message to Terrorists and Their Sponsors

The underlying message from India is unmistakable:

“Wherever you hide—whether in Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Myanmar—if you threaten India’s sovereignty or security, you will be found and neutralized.”

This aligns closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy stance that fighting terrorism requires striking at its source, not just containing it at the border.

As one defence analyst noted:

“This isn’t just about ULFA or NSCN. This is India’s way of telling Beijing and Islamabad that the era of asymmetric warfare without consequences is over.”

Conclusion

As the region awaits formal confirmation from India’s military leadership, the strikes have already reshaped the geopolitical discourse around insurgency in the Northeast. The blend of military precision, real-time intelligence, and strategic timing underscores a larger shift in India’s defence posture—one that prioritizes proactive, deterrence-based engagement over passive response.

India has drawn a red line. And this time, it runs not just across the western border, but across the jungles of Myanmar—and right up to the gates of Beijing.
