Delhi’s Environment Minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, recently held a high-level meeting with officials to address the alarming air pollution levels in the capital. One of the key decisions taken was the ban on refueling vehicles older than 15 years, which will be implemented across Delhi from April 1. Sirsa emphasized that the government is committed to enforcing stringent measures to curb vehicular emissions and pollution.
BJP’s Assertive Governance in Delhi
Since assuming power in Delhi, the BJP has been swift in implementing policies that challenge the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. BJP leader Pravesh Verma has openly stated that multiple scams—including the liquor scam, classroom scam, mohalla clinic scam, Yamuna cleaning scam, and advertisement scam—will be thoroughly investigated. This could have serious legal repercussions for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, potentially keeping him in Tihar Jail for an extended period.
Home Minister Amit Shah has been actively holding meetings regarding Delhi’s governance, focusing on key issues such as law and order, pollution control, and infrastructure development. The BJP’s aggressive decision-making is a direct challenge to Kejriwal’s administration and has significantly intensified the political battle in Delhi.
🚦 Key Measures to Combat Pollution
As part of its broader environmental strategy, the BJP has introduced several stringent measures to curb pollution:
🚗 Ban on Older Vehicles
🛑 Diesel vehicles older than 10 years will be completely phased out.
⛽ Petrol vehicles older than 15 years will no longer be allowed to refuel at petrol pumps across Delhi starting April 1, 2025.
🔄 This measure aims to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, a major contributor to Delhi’s hazardous air quality.
🏢 Installation of Smoke Towers
🏭 Corporate offices, hotels, and large establishments will be required to install smoke towers to curb emissions.
🌍 Measures will be taken to control carbon dioxide emissions from air conditioning units in commercial buildings.
🌊 Yamuna Riverfront Development
🏞️ The BJP government has announced a three-year plan to transform the Yamuna River into a clean and scenic riverfront, similar to Ahmedabad.
👷 Engineers and urban planners have already started working on the blueprint.
💧 A comprehensive sewage treatment infrastructure will be developed to ensure that untreated wastewater is no longer discharged into the river.
🏗️ Work on sewage treatment plants (STPs) is being carried out on a war footing to ensure only clean water enters the Yamuna.
📜 Ration Card Investigation and Crackdown on Illegal Immigrants
The BJP government has also announced a major overhaul of the ration card system, alleging widespread misuse under Kejriwal’s administration.
❌ Cancellation of Fake Ration Cards
🛂 The government plans to revoke ration cards issued to illegal immigrants, particularly Bangladeshis and Rohingyas.
🔍 A thorough investigation will be conducted, and officials involved in fraudulent issuance of ration cards will face legal action.
✅ Issuance of Genuine Ration Cards
📜 Migrants from Purvanchal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, who were previously denied ration cards, will now receive them to ensure that rightful beneficiaries are not left out.
Political Implications for Arvind Kejriwal and AAP
The AAP government is under intense scrutiny, especially after the BJP presented a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report in the Delhi Assembly. The report accuses AAP of misusing COVID-19 relief funds and engaging in corruption within the health sector. Additionally, the liquor policy case remains a major scandal, further damaging Kejriwal’s credibility.
With the BJP taking decisive steps, Kejriwal and his party face mounting political challenges. The silence of prominent AAP leaders, who once held frequent press conferences, suggests that the party is struggling to counter BJP’s aggressive governance.
What’s ahead?
The BJP’s governance approach in Delhi is marked by swift and assertive decision-making. With strict measures on pollution control, infrastructure development, and a crackdown on corruption, the political landscape in the capital is undergoing a significant transformation. As the BJP tightens its grip, it remains to be seen how Kejriwal and AAP navigate these growing challenges in the coming months.
