🗓️ Date: May 20, 2025
📍 Location: Constitution Club of India, New Delhi
In a significant political move aimed at reshaping youth engagement in Indian politics, Arvind Kejriwal, national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and former Delhi Chief Minister, officially launched the Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP). The event, held at the Constitution Club of India, witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and youth leaders across the country.
🎯 What is ASAP?
ASAP is envisioned as a nationwide student movement that seeks to challenge traditional political narratives and bring the principles of “alternative politics”—transparency, accountability, and public service—to college campuses.
Kejriwal emphasized,
“You cannot stay away from politics. Your job prospects, your education, your future—all are shaped by it.”
The newly launched wing replaces the Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), AAP’s earlier youth front, which had limited traction. ASAP will function in parallel with CYSS but aims to become more grassroots-driven and nationally scalable.
🧠 Key Objectives of ASAP
- Nationwide Outreach: Build a network of 5 lakh student volunteers across 50,000+ colleges in India.
- Civic Engagement: Involve students in cultural events, social service, and public discourse.
- Political Education: Foster understanding of governance, policymaking, and rights.
- Electoral Participation: Focus on upcoming Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections and expand to other state campuses.
🗣️ Kejriwal’s Pitch: Students as Catalysts of Change
Kejriwal’s speech marked one of his first major public engagements since AAP’s February 2025 electoral setback in Delhi. He made a spirited case for youth-led politics, sharply criticizing traditional parties:
- ⚠️ On BJP & Congress: Blamed them for the “rot” in India’s system—rising unemployment, privatized education, and healthcare inequity.
- 🧾 On AAP’s Record: Cited Delhi’s free electricity, upgraded public schools, and regulation of private school fees as examples of effective governance.
- 🚫 On “Hindu-Muslim Politics”: Accused legacy parties of divisive identity-based politics, asserting it has held India back for decades.
👨🎓 Who Attended?
The event drew students from:
- Delhi University
- Indraprastha University
- Various institutions in Punjab and Gujarat
Senior AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia, were also present, underlining the party’s serious intent behind this launch.
🚀 What’s Next?
ASAP is expected to roll out campus chapters, digital campaigns, and volunteer training over the next few months. The immediate focus will be on mobilizing support in upcoming student body elections, while building a longer-term ecosystem of politically aware and active youth.
🇮🇳 Why ASAP Matters
In a country where over 65% of the population is under 35, political parties have long ignored student voices beyond vote banks. With ASAP, AAP is aiming to rewrite that script—starting not with slogans, but with action on campuses.
Whether ASAP evolves into a serious force in student politics remains to be seen, but its message is clear:
India’s next political revolution might just start in a classroom.
