U.S. President Donald Trump has extended a temporary suspension of tariffs on China for an additional 90 days, pushing the deadline to November 10. The move averts, for now, an escalation in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies and gives negotiators time to address long-standing disputes. A summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is also under discussion.
“The relationship is very good with President Xi and myself,” Trump told reporters at the White House, according to The New York Times.
While the decision reduces immediate tensions with Beijing, it has intensified scrutiny over Trump’s wider tariff policy — particularly his recent 50% duty on Indian goods. Analysts say the measure, intended to penalize New Delhi for continuing oil imports from Russia, has provoked both diplomatic and economic pushback.
India Pushes Back, BRICS Unites
The tariff on India has triggered protests against American brands, with Indian businesses and industry bodies urging consumers to support “Made in India” products. Former Pentagon official Michael Rubin has called the policy a miscalculation, praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s firm response.
Diplomatic engagement is also accelerating. Former Indian ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu met Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday, while Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held extended talks with Xi Jinping — highlighting renewed BRICS cooperation.
What was once a loosely aligned grouping is now uniting on economic issues, with over 80 countries reportedly backing India’s position within just days, including several EU members.
China’s Exemption Raises Questions
Critics note that while India, Japan, Australia, and even U.S. allies in Europe have faced tariff hikes, China — which imports nearly 40% of Russia’s oil, double India’s share — continues to enjoy relief. This discrepancy has led to accusations that Trump is avoiding a direct confrontation with Beijing.
Economic Risks and Dedollarization
Economists warn that sustained high tariffs could accelerate de-dollarization, as countries look for alternative currencies in bilateral trade. India already conducts rupee–ruble transactions with Russia, a model other nation may adopt to bypass U.S. restrictions. A significant shift away from the dollar would reduce its global dominance and diminish Washington’s leverage in trade negotiations.
Putin Talks Under Strain
The planned August 15 summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska is also in jeopardy. Reports suggest Putin was displeased with Trump’s claim that tariffs on India were “weakening Russia’s economy.”
The talks have faced further criticism from 26 of 27 EU members, who object to any Ukraine peace discussions that exclude Kyiv. The bloc insists that sovereignty and territorial integrity must be central to any settlement.
Domestic and International Pressure Mounts
From Latin America to Southeast Asia, Trump’s tariff strategy has unsettled traditional partners. At home, consumers are beginning to feel the impact, with viral social media posts pointing to rising prices for everyday goods.
Former national security officials, economists, and policy experts warn that the White House’s approach risks isolating the U.S. diplomatically while harming its long-term economic position.
Outlook
With BRICS unity strengthening, EU criticism escalating, and domestic discontent growing, Trump faces a narrowing set of options. Diplomatic observers believe the 50% tariff on India may ultimately be scaled back under pressure from a widening coalition of nations.
For now, the 90-day reprieve for China offers temporary breathing space — but the larger battle over tariffs, alliances, and economic influence is far from over.
