Post-Poll Violence in Bengal: Thousands Forced to Flee Homes. Do you believe democracy is under threat?

Recent reports from Bengal have highlighted a disturbing trend of post-poll violence targeting Hindus who voted for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Scares and threats have caused over 10,000 people to leave their homes and find safety somewhere else. Aim is to put light on the situation and show why the government and police aren’t doing anything about it.

The High Court’s Concerns:

The Calcutta High Court is worried about the violence that is said to have happened in West Bengal after the Lok sabha election 2024. Justice Kaushik Chanda said that the court could ask for the Central Armed Police Force (CRPF) to be sent in for five years if the government doesn’t do something about the violence. The court pointed out that people who did not vote for the ruling party were targeted in similar ways after earlier elections.

Instances of Violence:

In one event that got a lot of attention, members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) broke into a housing complex in Kolkata and caused a scene because they found out that the people living there had not voted for the TMC. As a way to get back at the housing society, one TMC leader even said he would dump trash in front of it. These kinds of events have made people afraid and scared, and people are being picked on because of their political views.

Safe Houses for BJP Supporters:

People who support the Bharatiya Janata Party have been given safe places to stay in Baraipur and Kolkata to protect them from the violence. Over 150 party workers and their families who have been forced to leave their homes can stay in these safe places. Journalists from The Indian Express went to these safe houses and confirmed that people who were looking for safety were there.

Lack of Government Action:

The state government has not taken the right steps, even though the High Court was concerned and there was proof of violence. The police have been reprimanded by the court, but the situation remains unchanged. Victims haven’t filed FIRs (First Information Reports) against their attackers because they are afraid of getting hurt again. Bengal’s lack of safety and weakening of the rule of law have made people very worried about the state of democracy in the area.

The violence in Bengal after the election, which is mostly aimed at Hindus who supported for the BJP, is very worrying. Violence has been going on for a long time because the state government and police have not done anything. The fact that the Calcutta High Court warned against using the CRPF for five years shows how bad things are. It is very important for the central government to step in and make sure that everyone in Bengal is safe and secure. To bring peace and harmony back to the area, the loss of democracy and the rule of law must be fixed right away.
