In a dramatic turn of events, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal finds himself embroiled in controversy over allegations of falsifying details in his nomination for the New Delhi Assembly seat. The issue, which has sparked a political storm, centers on accusations of misrepresentation of income, failure to disclose criminal cases, and irregularities in voter registration. BJP leader Pravesh Verma has formally lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, demanding the rejection of Kejriwal’s nomination.
Allegations of Income Misrepresentation
According to Verma, Kejriwal’s affidavit contains significant discrepancies regarding his income. The affidavit reportedly states Kejriwal’s annual income as Rs. 1,67,066 in 2022-23, which Verma alleges is unrealistically low for someone in his position. Verma argues that the declared income does not account for the substantial salary and allowances Kejriwal receives as Chief Minister, which include a daily allowance (DA) of Rs. 10,000. The complaint estimates that Kejriwal’s actual annual earnings from these sources alone should exceed Rs. 5 lakh.
This alleged misrepresentation has raised questions about Kejriwal’s transparency and honesty. Verma has presented documents to substantiate his claims, asserting that Kejriwal’s income declarations fail to match the benefits he enjoys in his official capacity.
Concealment of Criminal Records
Another major allegation pertains to Kejriwal’s failure to disclose pending criminal cases against him in his affidavit. Under Indian election laws, candidates are required to publish details of their criminal records in newspapers to ensure transparency. Verma claims that Kejriwal has not only hidden these records but has also violated the Model Code of Conduct by doing so. The BJP leader has submitted a detailed list of FIRs and cases registered against Kejriwal to the Election Commission, arguing that this omission is grounds for disqualification.
Irregularities in Voter Registration
Verma has further alleged that Kejriwal is registered as a voter in two different constituencies: Ward 72 of Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi. This dual registration is a clear violation of electoral laws. Verma’s complaint questions how Kejriwal plans to vote in two places and accuses him of intentionally misleading electoral authorities by not rectifying the issue before filing his nomination.
Accusations of Outsourcing Campaign Workers
Adding to the controversy are reports that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers from outside Delhi are being brought in on daily wages to manage the campaign. In one instance, Verma alleged that workers were hired from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, to canvass for AAP in Delhi. Media reports also highlighted incidents where some of these workers openly expressed support for BJP leaders Yogi Adityanath and Narendra Modi, further embarrassing the party.
Documentary Controversy
Kejriwal’s troubles were compounded during a recent media event where his party showcased a documentary titled Unbreakable. The documentary, which portrayed Kejriwal’s resilience in the face of political adversities, was abruptly halted by authorities. Officials cited the Model Code of Conduct, which prohibits such events without prior approval during election campaigns. Critics have called the move another example of AAP’s alleged disregard for electoral norms.
Opposition Demands Action
The BJP, led by Verma, has intensified its demand for the Election Commission to take immediate action. Verma’s letter to the Commission outlines these allegations in detail, providing documentary evidence to support his claims. The demand for the rejection of Kejriwal’s nomination is growing louder, with opposition leaders accusing the AAP chief of systematically misleading voters and electoral authorities.
A Pattern of Alleged Misconduct
Critics of Kejriwal argue that these allegations fit a broader pattern of behavior. From his early days in politics, they claim, Kejriwal has positioned himself as a champion of honesty and accountability. However, the current allegations—ranging from financial misrepresentation to violations of election laws—threaten to undermine his carefully crafted image.
What Lies Ahead?
The Election Commission is now under pressure to act swiftly and impartially. If the allegations are proven, Kejriwal’s nomination could be cancelled, potentially derailing AAP’s campaign in Delhi. On the other hand, if the accusations are found to be baseless, they could serve to rally support for Kejriwal, portraying him as a victim of political vendetta.
The coming days will be crucial for both AAP and its opponents as the Election Commission reviews the evidence and decides on the course of action. For now, the controversy has added an unexpected twist to the Delhi Assembly elections, leaving voters and political analysts alike closely watching the developments.
