World Environment Day: Launch of the Campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”

Every year on June 5, people all over the world recognise World Environment Day as a time to raise awareness and take action for the environment. Today is an event that recognises the problems we face with the world and tries to change the way people treat it. Over the years, this event has grown into a large, global platform for reaching out to the public and encouraging them to make good changes for the environment.

Themes and Focus of World Environment Day 2024

World Environment Day was established in 1973 by the United Nations General Assembly, following a proposal by the United Nations Environment Program. The objective of this day is to bring together millions of people to discuss environmental protection and share best practices. Each year, a different country is selected to host the event. The celebration of the World Environment Day 2024 revolves around the pivotal theme “Reimagine, Recreate, Restore.”

The theme for 2024 is “Land Restoration Desertification and Building Drought resilience,” which emphasizes the need to restore land, prevent desertification, and address drought. It is worth noting that Saudi Arabia will be hosting World Environment Day in 2024. Slogan for 2024 is “Our Land, Our Future”

India’s Contribution towards Environment Protections

In India, the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and the Environment Protection Act of 1986 were enacted to safeguard the environment and its resources. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) was established in 2010 to address environmental disputes and ensure the quick resolution of environmental issues.

Prime Minister has launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign to commemorate the World Environment Day. PM Modi planted a peepal tree sapling at Buddha Jayanti Park in Delhi. He was accompanied by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav and Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. On this day, President Droupadi Murmu asked people to make collective efforts for building a better and greener world based on sustainability.

Every day, we leave an impact on our planet, and it is up to us to make a positive difference. On this World Environment Day, let us pledge to do our part in protecting the environment by planning one tree. Together, we can create a sustainable future for generations to come.
